Ford’s new Mustang modeled after the one Steve McQueen drove in the 1968 movie Bullitt is very similar to the original. But there are still some minor differences that make it even better.  If you’re considering placing your order for one of the 7,700 available units, here are some more similarities and differences.

• The interior is still the same charcoal black that you see in the movie. The trim is leather, and it has a satin metallic trim around the air vents, gauges and other places where it adds to the sense of machismo. The embossed word “Bullitt” graces the car’s interior sill plates.  The seats also have extra lumbar support because most of the drivers looking for nostalgia in this vehicle will likely be an older demographic.

• The Mustang Bullitt starts out at around $27,000, but extra features raise the price. The Mustang GT premium package adds to the price, of course. You can also get the Ford racing pack, with a high-performance cold air induction system.

• Today’s Bullitt Mustang has an electrical system for many of its features. Powered windows, door locks, mirrors, seat control and other components accompany these new Ford vehicles. Other things you can expect to find include keyless entry, tilt steering, tire pressure monitoring, MP3 player and eight speakers. Sirius satellite radio is also a favorite feature.

• Under the hood, you’ll find a powerful 4.6-liter engine with a three-valve V8. With 315 horsepower and 6,000 rpm, these new Ford vehicles have improved acceleration, reaching speeds of about 150 mph. I don’t think they were going that fast in the movie, but they were probably going over 100.

• A modified sport-tuned chassis offers drivers both power and performance for an extremely well-balanced vehicle. The structure of the rear axle gives the new Bullitt replicas a quick take-off from a dead stop. You won’t know whether to take it to the race track and take some bets or simply use the car to go to the grocery store on the weekends.

• New designs now replace the old shocks and struts for the Mustang GT.  This gives drivers more control when they drive aggressively. And let’s face it: who doesn’t want to drive a little crazy every now and then when sitting behind the wheel of a Mustang?

• For purists, Ford is offering the special edition vehicles in Dark Highland Green, the same color as the car McQueen drove in the movie. The wheels are Euro-flange cast aluminum to resemble the early American style.

I’m too young to remember when Steve McQueen’s Bullitt came to the big screen. But I’ve seen that movie so many times that it feels like a part of me. I watch the entire movie, but the real reason I watch is the car chase scene. I think that’s why a lot of people watch it. Any time you look at a list of the greatest movie car chases ever, this film is always among the top three if it’s not in the number one spot.

The chase scene involves the 1968 Mustang GT, one of the most popular Ford vehicles ever made. It’s an icon in American culture. When tough guy Steve McQueen raced it though the up-and-down streets of San Francisco trying to chase down the bad guys, he cemented its status even more. His was a dark green model (Dark Highland Green, to be exact) and all eyes watch every move that car makes during the seven-minute chase scene. Some may even have the sound of the shifting gears burned into their minds’ ears as the two cars speed along the open road.

In 2001, the Ford Motor Company offered fans a limited edition model that closely resembled the Mustang in Bullitt. These special limited edition vehicles had many of the same details as the movie car, and fans flocked to their local dealers to place an order for one of these cars.

Now, Ford is doing it again.
