used carsOkay, so that headline doesn’t surprise you. You’ve seen the older drivers that won’t go over 35 miles an hour. And many of them only drive their certified Fords to church on Sundays. But as an entire group, older drivers really do maintain their vehicles better.

According to a national survey conducted in Canada by Be Car Care Aware, drivers over the age of 50 take better care of their vehicles because they know more about the cars’ requirements and maintenance schedules. The survey asked drivers about their driving styles and maintenance habits, and results showed that nearly 75 percent of drivers between 50 and 64 take personal responsibility for maintaining their vehicles. That figure fell to 64 percent for drivers between 35 and 49, and it dropped even further to 50 percent for drivers aged 18 to 34.

Here are some more figures you might find interesting about drivers of different ages:

• 73 percent of drivers aged 50-64 change their oil regularly, compared to 70 percent of drivers aged 35-49 and 63 percent of those aged 18-34.

• 34 percent of older drivers perform at least one preventative maintenance service on their vehicles each year. Compare that to 25 percent of drivers aged 35-49 and 30 percent for those between 18 and 34.

• Older drivers are more aware about vehicle maintenance, including properly inflated tires, safety and fuel efficiency.

If everybody took care of their cars the way that older drivers do, there would be fewer breakdowns and problems on the roadway.
