shutterstock_5272873If you are going to tackle a car repair yourself, be sure to take safety precautions.  Most accidents occur because you jumped into the repair without thinking it through, or you just want to get it done quickly and your brain hasn’t caught up with the action.  Here is a quick check list of safeguards.  Read it through and keep it handy.
Jack safety:  If you’ve never used a jack before, please have someone show you proper procedure before you attempt it on your own.  Honest, practice makes perfect.  Place the jack in a carefully chosen location.  Insert the handle tightly.  Pump the mechanism slowly.  Make sure it’s steady.  Never get under a jacked up vehicle until you you are completely sure it is properly placed and locked in place.

Research the repair procedure:  Don’t begin a repair until you’ve gone over the technical procedure specifics for the work.  Read the information step-by-step without glossing over any aspect.  If there is anything you don’t understand, stop by your Ford Dealer and talk with the service technician.  Safety comes before ego.

Adequate lighting:  You can’t work effectively in a dimly lit garage.  Get yourself a couple of portable lights and position them to thoroughly light the repair area and the work space.  Tripping over small parts can be disastrous.

Do…not…smoke:  Never.  Fuel lines run all through the undercarriage.  A lit cigarette is a heck of a way to discover a small leak.  Can you say “KaPow?”

No drinking, either:  Tackling a car repair should be a serious endeavor.  This is not a time to invite the buds over for a party.  Work sober.  With too much frivolity bad judgment can come into play.  You can celebrate when you’ve completed the work successfully.

Don’t Work Alone:  Sure, you can probably tackle the repair on your own, but having a friend nearby to lend a hand is an important safety consideration, especially if you will be under a car that’s up on a jack.  This is not the time to be a lone wolf.  Even if your friend just keeps you company, there is safety in numbers.
There is also the time when it’s okay to admit that a repair is too much for you to take on.  That’s when you need to head over to your Ford Dealer and build a relationship with their professional technicians.
