With age come many physical and mental changes that can greatly affect the ability to drive safely.  Loss of alertness, muscle strength, range of motion and the capability to react quickly are the most common areas of diminished abilities.
The AAA has recommended to older drivers that they search for properly appointed vehicles offering features that complement issues associated with aging.  Here are a few suggestions:
* A car with power seats offering multiple adjustment capabilities can provide relief to those who have leg/hip pain, minimal range of motion in the knee, and decreased strength of the legs.  Not only does this make driving more comfortable but allows drivers to get in and out of the vehicle with less strain.
* More substantial steering wheels, power mirrors, dashboards with bigger control buttons, and keyless entry all benefit drivers with loss of motor skills or arthritic hands.
* If drivers suffer from limited vision or the inability to determine settings in a low contrast environment, they should consider expandable sun visors, larger controls for radio and climate, plus bright displays with vivid text.
All drivers, not just those in their golden years, should consider these safety features:
* Airbags that regulate their activation force based on the severity of the impact.
* High marks from the NHTSA and IIHS regarding rollover and crash test results.
* Additional padding on adjustable head restraints.
* Authentic stability control.
* Brakes with an anti-lock system.
These features shouldn’t be hard to find on a new Ford.  Whether it’s an Expedition, Taurus or Fusion, your Ford Dealer can make driving safe for you at any age.
