GPS Safety Advancements

Auburn University has teamed with the Ford Motor Company in an exciting project with results revealing that GPS satellites can assist in the prevention of accidents with their ability to “talk” to cars.
There are sound possibilities for the satellite system to provide an early alert if the vehicle appears to be losing control. The GPS may also communicate with the stabilizing control systems of the vehicle to prevent serious accidents.
In mid-October at a conference for electrical and electronics engineers the findings of this research will be presented.
Think of the possibilities. A satellite in the earth’s orbit might be able to prevent an auto wreck in the near future. The advancements created by the Auburn team delivers great prospects for Ford in prototype development of new vehicles.
This is but one of 16 safety research projects that Ford has earmarked for 2009 with an investment of four million dollars. A grant of $120,000 was awarded to Auburn for the GPS research. Their team continues to explore the combination of satellite information and inertial measurement units for exacting details on the motion of a vehicle. This valuable information can be tapped to increase the electronic stability performance of a vehicle’s control system, including the detection of skids.
Ford emphasizes their commitment to safety leadership and vital partnerships.
