The Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award will be presented to the Ford Motor Company this month in honor of their fuel efficient EcoBoost engine. This award, now in its 5th year, seeks out innovative products whose design can change the world. The award also recognizes the inventors behind the innovations. This year Ford is the only auto manufacturer to be awarded.
This year the honorees include everything from flying cars to wind turbines. Not only are the inventions of these winners wonderfully imaginative, they also possess the prospect of improving lives. Concerns that are addressed include medical care, climate change, and energy shortages.
The ability to decrease emissions and increase fuel economy is characteristic of the EcoBoost. This process uses turbo charging and gas injection to enhance engine output. This is but another highlight in Ford’s plans to create advancement in technology that delivers high output, small displacement power trains.
Ford utilizes a power train strategy which incorporates immense amounts of computer code that adjusts appropriately to maximize the transmission operation. Unique in their development of this process, Ford has created a direct injection and turbo charging engine not found in development at any other automaker.
The EcoBoost is unique in its technology meeting buyers’ desire for performance along with the fuel efficiency being demanded.
The editors of Popular Mechanics surveyed a diverse field of experts to compile a roster of commendable nominees. Their Board of Advisors refined the selection process and worked with editors to declare the winners. The complete list of recipients will be available in their November issue.
By 2013, approximately 90% of the North American lineup from Ford will utilize the EcoBoost technology. But why wait? With their hybrid Fusion and Escape, Ford is already delivering fuel-efficient cars to the demanding public.
