Ford Trucks: The First Generation

Think your new Ford truck is cool? Imagine how customers felt when it was first introduced in 1948. Originally called the F-1 before the line expanded to include the F-1 through F-8, the truck was a revolution in pick up truck technology and was based on Ford’s initial car based designs.
The modern design — by 1948 standards — included a one piece flat windshield and integrated headlights. As an option, customers could purchase the foot pedal operated “See Clear” windshield washer, a sun visor, and a tail light on the passenger side. The elitists could also purchase additional chrome or two horns to complete the new Ford truck look.
The design of the Ford F-series truck didn’t change much between 1948 and 1952. The grill and head lights changed a bit — going from head lights that were originally attached to the fenders to headlights that connected to a cross piece. The rear window widened as the few years went on and Ford redesigned the dash board in the later models of the first generation of the F-series.
Seven different engines went into the various original Ford F-series, ranging from 3.5 liter all the way up to 5.5 liter. The F-1 was a half tonne pickup truck and the sizing went all the way up to two tonne. There were special versions created for school buses and parcel delivery and transmissions ran the gamut from three speed to five speed with options for light duty, heavy duty, and overdrive. There was a new Ford truck for every possible need.
Stay tuned for the next two weeks to read the rest of the history of the Ford F-Series Truck.
