Ford Makes Safest Under $30K List

Ford Taurus InteriorIn a new report released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Ford Taurus topped the list of Safest Cars Under $30K in their category.

The report tested numerous vehicles based on capacity to handle front collisions, rear collisions and side collisions. Front collisions result in the greatest number of fatalities, followed by collisions from the side. Auto makers have been putting their focus on increasing the safety features in vehicles to try to limit the number of automobile related deaths, and their focus has been paying off.

The new Ford Taurus has ESC — or Electronic Stability Control — something the IIHS deems so important that it was a necessary feature to even make the list. According to Russ Radar, the spokesperson for the IIHS, “we’ve seen ESC reduce fatalities by as much as half in some instances. ESC is especially great at reducing the fatalities for single-car crashes.”

The theory behind this new technology is that instead of minimizing the impact on the driver during a crash, ESC can avoid the impact and crash altogether. It helps to improve the handling of the vehicle by detecting skids and then uses the vehicle’s brake system to realign the wheels and circumvent the crash.

In addition to ESC, the Taurus has traction control, impressive air bags, and head restraints. The Electronic Stability Control is being hailed as a major development in automobile safety. The feature is optional on the 2008 Ford Taurus Limited and the manufacturer’s suggested retail price on the new Ford car is $27,620.
